'84 Roof flex

Post by Ruffinit »

Question to all y'all: When I'm running my '84 and have my window down at highway speeds, my roof flexes making a flexing steel sound especially with gusts or when being passed from the oposite direction by a semi. I noticed that it does this also when I close the back hatch.

The question is; does this happen only on the '84s, is it because I don't have a roof rack, or because I need more insulation between the roof and the headliner? I have 3 BIIs, an 88, 89 and my current '84 which is my driver. Both the 88 and 89 have the stock roof racks. They don't make the sound.

Would a solution be dynamat, plain 'ol insulation, a roof rack or just live with it? Understand that this is annoying only, it doesn't cause any problems. I'm not going to cut off the roof or anything that drastic, I already have a Ranger.

Ideas??

I get that same loud popping noise when i'm going down the highway with high winds or with my windows down and mines a 88, After I bedlined my truck (roof included) I only heard the noise once but there was some really bad gusts going on. I think a roof rack would help with the flex.

Cool. Thanks for the response. Just wasn't sure whether it was the first year or not. I'm replacing my headliner and so may just go with some DynaMat for the roof.. The bedliner's a great idea. Did you use Herculiner? I've looked at the fastenings for the roof rack and it's a lot of work installing one even though I have the donor.. I didn't want to put it on anyway, I'm trying to keep the lines a clean as possible and am even moving the spare to the inside.

Yeah I used Hurculiner, 2 gallons did the inside, outside, prerunner bumper, and tire carrier. That'll take care of any new rust for a while haha.
