Re: tansfer case or tranny problem?
most likely trans if it pops out of gear. the trans are weak on these things and t cases are pretty strong. I would chack your oil levels in both first

Re: tansfer case or tranny problem?
ok im getting it towed to a warm shop that i can look at it some more...its -47 with wind chill here a little to cold to be out mucking on a truck. Ill let you know what happens
Re: tansfer case or tranny problem?
if it is the transmission can that be replaced with out taking out the motor?
Re: tansfer case or tranny problem?
hey checked it all out im pretty sure its the transfer case the transmission is a manual and all the linkages were fine and a got some one to crawl underneath in the snow and he says its coming from the transfer case the noise so he decided the chain came off inside i thought it was a gear driven transfer case? but evan if the chain came off 2wd should still work should it not?
Re: tansfer case or tranny problem?
These are chain driven. If the chain comes off, the BII is not going to move. Like putting it into neutral on the transfer case. Good luck. In answer to your other question, yes, the tranny can be changed without removing the engine as can the transfer case.
As Rockcrawler said, and if you are new to BIIs, the manual trannys can be weak. This is mostly because the tranny fluid is not kept at the proper level. Most of the manual trannys in the BIIs use ATF, not gear lube and to mix them means death to the tranny.

ok awsome guys im just gonna get a new tranny and transfer case....is there any tricks or helpfull ideas for removing the old and puting in the new? how are the drive lines for holding up in this things? my pecker is bigger then my drive shaft.is there any after market ones that dont look like a twig that would work? sorry for the stupid questions....atleast i got a BII thats the main thing i guess:P
Re: tansfer case or tranny problem?
Haven't really seen any problems with the drive shafts themselves, nor heard of any, those should be fine. As far as removal/replacement, drop 'em out the bottom with the usual safety awareness... If you replace with a different model xfr case or tranny make sure you measure the donor's drive shafts for length though.
