I have a 1988 Bronco II 4x4, 5 spd man. transmission, 72K original Miles. Problem: 1st gear pops out of gear upon releasing the clutch. I can get it stay in gear sometimes by going into 2nd gear prior to going into 1st gear. Other gears are OK. Prior to the problem, I changed the transmission oil and added Lucas gear oil to the transmission to quiet 3rd and 5th gears, it quieted down. Then the popping out of gear happened with 1st gear....related? The old oil in the trans seemed to be runny (ATF?) compared to the new 80W gear oil.
What does it sound like ....what is involved in fixing it? The cost?

Re: 88 Bronco II 1st gear pops out of gear
Your Bronco should have automatic tranny fluid in that manual transmission. Figure out which tranny of the two 5 speeds available you have and call the Ford garage. If it had ATF oil in it when you drained it, it probably needs it. Running gear oil in a tranny that was built for AFT is a sure way to kill it or at least make it work badly. The reason that yours was whining especially in OD is because someone let the fluid in it get low.
