something is over heating and causing the clutch not to go into gear. well this time it would go into gear but no movement, it just sat there revvin. so i stopped the truck, and let it cool for about an hour, checked the fluid, there wasent any so i put some in, got in and it ran great. about 5 miles later it does the same thing, but i cought it before it wouldnt go into gear. so i let it cool while i walked over to the sonic ( main objective of the night= go to the sonic car show), while i was there Broncomom decided to put more fluid in it. when i got back she told me, so i took as much out as i could. got in the truck, started it and drove away. on the way home i started to smell something funny, then my tack went out, then about 2 miles later i noticed smoke... then it started to come in through the hole where the stick is. so i pulled into a parking lot and turned it off. when i look, there is fluid all over the side of the truck, and all over the resivor. down the firewall. got under the truck, smoke is comin from the release valve where you drain the fluid. then towed it home.
very unhappy. any suggestions?
ok this time it got bad...

Re: ok this time it got bad...
Wow man I am like really confused here. I am going to ask some questions so maybe I can understand what is going on.
("something is over heating and causing the clutch not to go into gear.")
I assume you are saying that you have a manual transmission and your clutch is slipping? Or are you saying when you push the clutch pedal in and try to shift into gear you can't get the rig go into gear?
("well this time it would go into gear but no movement, it just sat there revvin.")
So you are saying you were able to put it in gear and let out the clutch and the rig did not move! Is that correct?
(" so i stopped the truck, and let it cool for about an hour, checked the fluid, there wasent any so i put some in, got in and it ran great.")
What fluid are you talking about clutch fluid or transmission fluid or what?
("about 5 miles later it does the same thing, but i cought it before it wouldnt go into gear. so i let it cool while i walked over to the sonic ( main objective of the night= go to the sonic car show),")
So I understand you were able to drive about 5 miles and then let the truck set.
("while i was there Broncomom decided to put more fluid in it. when i got back she told me, so i took as much out as i could. got in the truck, started it and drove away.")
This is weird? You say she put fluid in. Fluid in what? If she added fluid to the clutch why did you remove the fluid? I am confused....
Ok I am going to make an assumption this has to do with the clutch. Just from the description I would say you have some significant problems. It sounds like the clutch master, and slave cylinders are leaking. You also may have air in the line. These clutch master/slave hydraulics can sometimes be a bugger to bleed and that can cause problems.
Believe it or not, The first thing I would be looking at is the clutch disk and pressure plate. all of that slipping has probably burnt the lining to toast and if it is bad you ain't gonna get it to work no how!.
I will be willing to bet you have an internal slave cylinder and it is leaking fluid into the bell housing and then it got on the clutch disk which starts the slipping and it is all downhill from there.
Ok if you brought the rig to my shop for an estimate of repairs needed based on what I am assuming here, I would say Replace the clutch disk, pressure plate, and throw out bearing. I would also rebuild or replace the slave cylinder and clutch master. So here is the list.
Clutch disk
pressure plate
throwout bearing
Pilot bearing (just as well replace it while you can)
Rebuild or Replace slave cylinder
Rebuild or Replace clutch master cylinder.
There is always little unforeseen things like lines if needed or bolts or screws or maybe more
...
It is not a huge expense if you do it yourself or have a friend help out!
If ya take it to a shop you better "Roll up your sleeves and Bend over" it won't be pretty.
Good luck.

Re: ok this time it got bad...
tekatlarge 100% correct. tach not working has nothing to do with your problem.
won't go into gear because clutch fork not moving enough
clutch slips- because fluid on clutch disk
smoke is from leaking clutch resevior or slave cylinder leaking on exhaut manifold.
why in the world would you ever take fluid out of something that you know you have had to refill again?? your mom knows what she is doing, i would take more tips from her.
go buy a cluth kit from autozone for about $100, new master or slave cylinder and definetly buy another line between the two.

Re: ok this time it got bad...
thanks for the replies, i will look into all of it.
i looked at it today, and pretty much came up with the same ideas.
what i think happend: the slave cylinder was shot in the first place, since there was no clutch fluid in the line then the fluid didnt fall through the crack in the clutch hydraulic hose in the bell housing (that let air into the system). when i put fluid into the clutch master cylinder the first time, there was just enough to flow with out leaking too much. when broncomom put the second batch of fluid put in, that caused more pressure in the hose, causing the leak to grow larger, and when the tranny got too hot for the fluid, th efluid started to burn inside the bell housing, causing the smoke to come out of the release valve (where you bleed the clutch fluid out). and it caused it to shoot from the master cylinder itself.
And i figure that the slave cylinder has melted since it is a mix of plastic and metal, and thats why it wont work at all now.
i know i am going to have to replace the entire system now, and i am going o have to drop the tranny in order to do it. and the disk is probably shot also
vabronconut:
i do not know why you would put more fluid into the master cylinder when it is already full, i know it was going to happen sooner or later, but putting it in only caused it to happen faster, im not trying to argue but please explain how that was good to do?
tekatlarge:
1.yes i have a manual tranny, and it is both slipping and not going into gear
2.yes that is correct
3.clutch fluid
4.yes, that is correct
Does that make any more sense?
thanks, kolton

Re: ok this time it got bad...
while i was there Broncomom decided to put more fluid in it. when i got back she told me, so i took as much out as i could.
this is what you wrote, so i am assuming that she saw it needed more fluid and added as needed, then you tried to empty some out.
a hydraulic system works off of fluid pressure, no fluid equals no clutch movement. so thats why i would keep it topped off. i know it smoked the clutch but i am guessing the damage was already done by the time you stopped at the sonic.
any how im not bashing you just trying to figure out what you did, your original post was confussing

vabronconut: i didnt mean to make it out that you were bashing. i was just curious and trying to learn as much as i can. u really seem to know what you are talking about and i greatly appreciate the replies.
i went through today and discovered some more things to be replaced, but what confuses me is that at the bottom of the tranny, there is an open slot (like a vent or something) and there is some kind of black netting or fabric coming out.
what could this be? - im thinking some kind of spacer or filter? but thats just a guess

take a pic and post it here, i have no idea what would be on the bottom of a tranny like what your describing. vents are almost always located on top.kolton wrote:vabronconut: i didnt mean to make it out that you were bashing. i was just curious and trying to learn as much as i can. u really seem to know what you are talking about and i greatly appreciate the replies.
