Clunk noise

Post by stevenf »

Have a bad clunk and vehicle jerks about 2" when I go from park to reverse or from reverse to drive and drive to reverse. Neutral and park dont do this. Thought it was u-joints when we first got it so my dad bought a new driveshaft with two u joints. It didnt fix the problem at all.
Ive read different threads from google searches and it seems this clunk is common with these vehicles. I never could find a cause though. Any ideas?

two things i can think of, one is the transmission if its this it could be the valve body needs rebuilt, not to bad a job just be extremly careful putting it back together right

and second is the rear end has slop. easy way to check for the rear end is to put it in 4wd and disconnect the rear drive shaft and make sure your lock outs are locked in. if it doesn't clunk then you know its the rear, if it does then it sounds like the tranny needs attention.
