Were you satified with the power increase or do you wish you went with the 302?

well i havn't done the 4.o swap but i do have the 4.0 in my 2000 ford explorer (which i have thought about turning into a rock crawler) it is 2wd and it has allot of balls ! its a great engine, i have 158k miles on it and all i have done to it is replace a timing tensioner. no smoking or any other signs of giving out yet knock on wood. believe it or not the trany is untouched other than a filter change also. its a automatic. the engine is the overhead cam version of the 4.0. when i was planning my build i went with the 5.0 because it was cheap and i am more framiliar with swaping in this motor. i also like the transmission choices with the 5.0 more. you can have nearly any tranny made behind a v-8 , np 435, zf,t-18, 4speed toploaders, aod, aode, 4r70w, c4, c6.... and more. the 4.0 i am not that sure about what the choices are. although i stock 5 speed would be really nice with overdrive, you would just have to gear down to compensate for the higher first gear. another deal is the 4.0 early versions versus the 4.0 sohc engines i think the change over was around 99 or 00. i know nothing about the earlier engines.

if you can pick up a complete old explorer it may be cheaper than a 5.0 swap as i know that a ton of parts can be reused like the radiator, motor mounts, exhaust, all things that on 5.0 swap will run you money.

good luck !
