Sputter on take off

Post by Badwind »

I have a 1988 BII and since probably 2 years I have been replacing stuff in the fuel system: both Fuel Pumps, Fuel Filter, Fuel Regulator. But lately it has developed a little bit of a cough or sputter on take off and it doesn't matter if it is under a load or not and it wouldn't idle worth a hoot so I changed the Idle control, Throttle Position Sensor, MAPP Sensor. Now I have gotten rid of the idle problem but not the sputter. I ran the codes and it said it was an 02 sensor changed that as well as a new Fuel filter still have sputter. I changed the Engine Control Computer still have the sputter. Now I'm at my wits end and need some help. :mad2: :mad2:

i throw my two cents in here as i always do, so take it as friendly help, and if i misread your problem then forgive me im from east tennessee and a bit stupid

first question i have for you is the obvious, why did you change the fuel filter so much? was it ever clogged? did it solve a problem in the past?

reason i ask is these tanks have a real problem with rot on the top where it seats on the cross frame rail, you can't see until you drop the tank. and of course dropping the tank is the last option i would go with but if you constantly are changing filters to keep it running good then i would seriously take a look inside of it.

second, is does it have enough fuel at the rail? it could be the low pressure pump in the tank not giving enough supply fuel to the high pressur pump causing it to cavitate from sucking fuel threw a dead low pressure pump.

if you have exhausted the fuel supply option and everything checks good, check the distibutor pickup. ok maybe i would try that first if i knew my fuel was ok.

Thanx for the reply vabronconut.
Well I guess I changed the fuel filter so often is we get bad gas here from time to time I'm a old farm boy that did that first whenever I had a problem, just a force of habite. You have a very good point about the fuel pump I had changed it about 2 years ago so I guess it could have gone bad again they just don't make stuff like the use to. And I never thought about the distributer pick-up, I'll give that a looksee and let ya know. Thanx again. :D
