clueless

so i have a problem with my bronc, i can start it and it runs fine and i start driving it and go about 5 miles or so then it starts to sputter real bad and wont hardly move at all, i can cut it off and restart it and it runs fine for about 5 more miles and so on. i have replaced the plugs, wires, ignition control module, coil, cap, rotor, on board computer, and on a long shot the gas cap. i am completely out of ideas and almost out of money. so if anyone can help i would greatly appreciate it.

I see two things you didn't mention.

First thing is the fuel filter? if ya got a funked up filter it can act like that.

The other item is the (Internal pickup) in the distributor. NOT the TFI that bolts on the outside. That internal pickup is overlooked so many times and should be something to look at at the sign of a heat or temp type problem. Here is the likly senerio. The engine starts, Warms up, after the temperature of the module reaches it's trigger point then the internal pickup fails, engine stops, you set, engine cools off, and then you restart drive a few miles and the cycle repeats.

first tip----quit buying parts. have you tried pulling the codes from the computer yet? what is it telling you? it looks like you have covered the ignition. have you pulled the fuel filter and took a look at it or tried to blow through it? try disconnecting the exhaust at the cat and let it run like that. it sounds to me like a fuel problem. let me know what codes you have

Mine was doing this too. '89 2.9 until I finally replaced the O2 sensor. You can and should test it before replacing though. I'm with VABroncoNut, don't replace unless you're sure. I played around with mine for 3 months. There was no codes which pointed it this way and it reacts differently than any of the cars I've had to replace it on. You can test with a simple multimeter. Check your repair manual for procedure.

hey mine did that to we puitnew parts and stuff then took it to my dads friend and he looked at it and said it was the distributer we replaced it and it runs like its new

thanks for all the help everyone, i forgot to mention that i did replace the fuel filter. I had the codes pulled on it and didnt get anything. i did try disconnecting the exhaust pre-cat and still seemed to have the same problem. ill try checking the o2 sensor next, then if that shows good i just got my hands on a distributor from a friend. hopefully i can get this thing fixed im getting tired of driving my heep wrangler around, plus the bronco puts the jeep to shame on the trail. yeah the one in the pic is the one im working on i got rid of my 84, thanks for the compliment.
