1988 bronco11, bad gas milege
hi, ijust got a 1988 bronco11. after driving it for a while, i noticed it wasnt getting very good gas milege. i think this truck has a 14 gal. tank, and i got around 200 miles tothe tank, this is around 14 miles per gal. (thats not good ) the truck starts and run great, new plugs, wires pvc, and breather. i dont know what a 2.9 motor should get. but you would think it would be more than 14 miles to the gal. any suggestions would be helpful, oh i forgot to say, i dont have a lead foot, i do the speed limit.

when I fist got my 86 bii I drove it from KY to DE and it killed me on gas. I had done the samethings you did for a tune up. I think I used 4 tanks to get there. talking to my dad he said something about the o2 sensor. I replaced it and the difference on the way back was 1 tank less. my 90 honda can do it in 2 tanks. now thats still not great milage but it is a noticable differnce.
bottom line these truck don't get great milage even when everything is fresh. I would estimate about 19 at best.

my 2.9L gets about 11-12mpg on a good day. Always has since we have owned it. In a few weeks I am going to replace the O2 sensor, plugs, wires, and cold air intake. See if I cant pull out 15mpg (I doubt it...)

My BII gets anywhere from 6-14 depending on the season. When it's -50 outside it has to warm up a lot longer so I consequently get bad mileage. In the summer when it's 70 out I get 14. This is all city mileage. I'm looking into an HHO Generator and see if that works and hopefully get 8 or 9 in winter and 20 in the summer. We'll see....

My 5-speed 1990 BII was getting 17-20 city mpg with 30" tires before it quit running right. 23mpg Highway.

FORD....no other has so many acronyms.

My '88 2.9 5spd with manual hubs gets 20-22 on the highway and just under 20 in town. When it's REALLY cold out in the winter and the hubs are locked in, I NEVER get below 15. As I said, mostly highway. My '84 2.8 auto when I picked it up got around 12 or 13. Fixed the carb, tuned it up and throughout the winter it got 17 or 18. The '94 4.0 5spd Explorer gets 19 on the highway, hubs turned out. I'm not sure how you all are driving, but this is mostly speed limit. I'm in Iowa.. These things do get good mileage.

i have a 90 with a 2.9 and a auto trans, i usually get 15 all around driving and thats with 33x12.50's, before i lifted it i could get 17. still beats my heep wrangler with the 4.0 and 3 speed that only gets 14 on a great day.
