so today my steering box started spewing ATF out of the area where the sector shaft is... aftering looking around i havent found any good information on this or how to repair it. i would think that its as easy as pulling the pitman, digging the trashed seal out and putting a new one in but i cannot find the seal by itself.. rather in a lower shaft kit like this..
http://www.napaonline.com/MasterPages/N ... e+Seal+Kit
am i wrong about how the seal goes in?? can i just buy that kit and only use the seal?
pictures???
thanks in advance.

Re: Steering box leaking around sector shaft
You will have to buy the kit to get the seal, it's not that hard on the Ford boxes I have done but I have not ever done a BII one. You will probably have to pull the sector shaft to do the seals and reset the depth when done.
You will get fluid everywhere so I have not ever taken any pictures for fear of ruining my camera.

Re: Steering box leaking around sector shaft
i found this on parts america.com which is advanced auto, it is just for the pitman seal repair

i could be wrong but i think the seal you see from the bottom is pretty much just a dust seal, if the box is leaking the seals behing the dust seal have failed. its easy enough to pull the box and remove the dust seal to get a better idea of what your in for. some boxes are a nightmare to get the seals in without pinching them, because they all are on a single shaft. anyhow the kits cheap give it a try !

it souds like a nightmare... might be worth just finding a non-leaky box at the j-yard and swapping them out you think?...

Re: Steering box leaking around sector shaft
tried some stop leak tonight and a few other things... it slowed it down but its still leaking, which obviously isnt acceptable.
can changing the seals be done without removing the box?

ya you can do it from the truck, once you pull the pitman arm, to change just the lower seal all you should need is a set of snap ring pliers. let me know if the lower seal fixes it.

Re: Steering box leaking around sector shaft
i bought the kit today, it came with a diagram. and i got some directions from a member on NMVJC.org (local board) who has done this with his gen1 explorer... he said just remove the snap ring... start the truck and turn the wheel to blow the seals and spacers out... then use a pipe or socket to punch the new spacers and seals back up in there, replace snapring and done.
thank you for you help also

Re: Steering box leaking around sector shaft
i just completed fixing it earlier... it wasnt that bad actually. just pull the sector shaft out of the top and pull the seals out. the spacers werent used in this case...because they werent in there before, only a pressure seal and dust seal and clip. took me about 1.5 hours to do all of this working at a comfortable pace.... pump is quiet again and no leaks.
thanks for the help.

Re: Steering box leaking around sector shaft
Yah, I was looking at replacing that same seal because mine was leaking like a mofo.
jeffsbroncograveyard.com has a kit kind of like the one you showed. I was going to buy it and do the swap, even after I relized the the sector shaft would have to come out also. But one I pulled my pitman arm off I notice that my sector shaft was twisted I just replace the hole box with a reman'd one.
