302 Will Not STart

ok well this is actually on my f150 but seeing as how a lot of you are so knowledgeable and run 302's I thought I would ask

I drove my '88 f150 to work the other day and it ran fine except it was idling low so I figured it might be TPS so I unplugged the TPS and it ran fine until I got to work(20mi)

When I went out later in the day to go home it would not start unless I held my foot to the floor at which point it would run REALLY REALLY poorly and oil came out the exhaust pipe along with blue/black and white smoke(it kinda alternated)

I did a compression test all the plugs where fouled but the compression is great (150-160 all around)

anyone have any ideas?

What did the plugs look like? Were they clean and light tan,or were they black and oily,or black and sooty?

First to do. I believe we are talking F.I. engine right? is to PULL THE CODES!! see what the computer says.

If the spark plugs are wet and oily means oil is coming from somewhere like valve guide or rings. If they are dry and sooty black says to rich a mixture.

To me your description would make me look real hard at the fuel pressure regulator. I would pull the vacuum line from it and look for signs of fuel in the vacuum lines. Typical regulator failure.

You never said if the vehicle burnt oil before or not. If it burnt oil it could have a fouled oxy sensor.

Oil out the tailpipe can't be good. To me, that volume of oil says head gasket or maybe intake gasket. I really don't know. I guess it could be a valve guide pumping it into a cylinder. Sounds pretty serious.

Did you plug the Tps back in?

tekatlarge has the correct answer.. it was the FPR it had a REALLY bad hole in it... ok so the solution/problem as a hole was as follows...

The Plugs where half wet/oily and the other half sooty... one plug was really bad with oil which was 2nd back on drivers side(6) so as it turns out...

the FPR went bad started to cause and idle issue due to a rich condition
next day it flooded bad and fuel squeezed down cylinders and into oil
Oil level got to high(due to gas) and cylinders had oil in them and shot it down exhaust

so I drained oil tried to start it again it started but ran quit rough unless revving it up to about 4000rpm+
checked various sensors etc nothing fixed the issue so I pulled vacuum line on FPR and it shot fuel out
so replaced FPR and all is good now YAH!! :redneck:

oh and the Haynes manual said to get FPR out I would have to pull the driver side fuel rail which involves taking off intake but I just want to say with a 4mm hex bit from a small screwdriver set and a 1/4" small wrench you can do it it is just quite difficult or if you found a shallow allen key that would work too

Heh...good call Tek. Oil out the tailpipe sounded bad to me. Guess you're not as dumb as I look! ;)
