radio, wipers and gauges don't work- cylinder lock?
radio, wipers and gauges don't work- cylinder lock?
I have a 88 Bronco II with V-6 and 5 speed manual trans. I was listening to the radio at lunch one day when the radio lost power. I turned the switch off and then turned it back on. The radio came back on, but went out a few moments later. After playing with it for a little, I found that I could turn the switch just a hair past the normal position when it ran and my radio would work. Driving home that afternoon I found out that when my radio was out so was my gas and temp. gauges and wipers. I switched out the cylinder lock and this took care of the problem, for about a week. I have since replaced two more locks but now it is not fixing the problem. What do I try next?

Check the connector at the bottom of the steering column where the harness attaches.
I have seen this plug get loose and send the gremlins all over the electrical system.
I also seem to remember a recall on ignition switches but I can't remember if it effected the BII.
Oh, one more thing. If you have a large heavy key chain, or see signs of heavy use with a bundle of keys, I would suspect the ignition switch itself.

Igniton switch
I do have about seven keys on this ring and I suspect that might be the problem. If this is the problem, will I need to replace the ignition switch or is there some kind of lever or or pin inside the housing that would need to be replaced. I just need to know what part to ask for. Would a NAPA store carry this part?

I have about that many keys also. It is hard on them for sure.
I did not find any recalls on the switch
Lets see how a copy paste from a word doc works and this is the complete ignition switch info.
Ignition Switch REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
1983–88 Models
1. Rotate the lock cylinder key to the Lock position.
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery.
3. For tilt column only, remove the upper extension shroud by squeezing it at the 6 and 12 o'clock positions and popping it free of the retaining plate at the 3 o'clock position.
4. Remove the 2 trim shroud halves by removing the 2 attaching screws.
5. Disconnect the ignition switch electrical connector.
6. Drill out the break-off head bolts connecting the switch to the lock cylinder housing by using a 1 ⁄ 8 in. (3mm) drill bit.
7. Remove the 2 bolts, using an Ex-3 Easy-out® tool or equivalent.
8. Disengage the ignition switch from the actuator pin. To install:
9. Rotate the ignition key to the RUN position, approximately 90°clockwise from LOCK.
10. Install the replacement switch by aligning the holes on the switch casting base with the holes in the lock cylinder housing. Note that the replacement switch is provided in the RUN position. Minor movement of the lock cylinder to align the actuator pin with the U shaped slot in the switch carrier may be required.
11. Install the new break-off head bolts and tighten until heads shear off (approximately 35–50 inch lbs.).
12. Connect the electrical connector to the ignition switch.
13. Connect the negative battery cable to the battery terminal. Check the ignition switch for proper operation in all modes.
14. Install the steering column trim shrouds.
1989–90 Models.
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery.
2. Remove the steering wheel.
3. As necessary, remove all under dash panels in order to gain access to the ignition switch.
4. As necessary, lower the steering column to gain working clearance.
5. Disconnect the ignition switch electrical connectors.
6. Remove the ignition switch retaining screws from the studs. Disengage the ignition switch from switch rod. Remove the switch from the vehicle. To install:
7. Position the lock cylinder in the LOCK position.
8. To set the switch, position a wire in the opening in the outer surface of the switch through its positions until the wire drops down into the slot.
9. Position the ignition switch on the column studs and over the actuating rod. Torque the retaining nuts to 3.3–5.3 ft. lbs.
10. Remove the wire from the slot in the housing. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
NOTE:
The slot is in the bottom of the switch where the rod must be inserted to allow full movement through the switch positions.
Ignition Lock Cylinder Assembly
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
1983–88 Models
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the trim shroud. Remove the electrical connector from the key warning switch.
3. Turn the lock cylinder to the RUN position.
4. Place a 1 ⁄ 8 in. (3mm) diameter pin or small drift punch in the hole located at 4 o'clock and 1 1 ⁄ 4 in. (31.75mm) from the outer edge of the lock cylinder housing. Depress the retaining pin, and pull out the lock cylinder.
To install:
5. Prior to installation of the lock cylinder, lubricate the cylinder cavity, including the drive gear, with
Lubriplate® or equivalent...
6. To install the lock cylinder, turn the lock cylinder to the RUN position, depress the retaining pin, and insert it into the lock cylinder housing. Assure that the cylinder is fully seated and aligned into the interlocking washer before turning the key to the OFF position. This action will permit the cylinder retaining pin to extend into the hole in the lock cylinder housing...
7. Using the ignition key, rotate the lock cylinder to ensure correct mechanical operation in all positions. Install the electrical connector onto the key warning switch. 8. Connect the battery ground cable.
9. Check for proper ignition functions and verify that the column is locked in the LOCK position.
10. Install the trim shrouds.
1989–90 Models
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the steering wheel.
2. On vehicles equipped with tilt wheel, remove the tilt lever.
3. On vehicles equipped with tilt wheel, remove the steering column collar by pressing on the collar from the top and bottom while removing the collar.
4. Remove the instrument panel trim cover retaining screws. Remove the trim cover.
5. Remove the 2 screws from the bottom of the steering column shroud. Remove the bottom half of the shroud by pulling the shroud down and toward the rear of the vehicle.
6. If the vehicle is equipped with automatic transmission, move the shift lever as required to aid in removal of the shroud. Lift the top half of the shroud from the column.
7. Turn the lock cylinder with the ignition key in it to the ON position. On vehicles equipped with automatic transmission be sure that the selector lever is in the PARK position.
8. Push down on the lock cylinder retaining pin with a 1 ⁄ 8 in. (3mm) diameter wire pin or small punch. Pull the lock cylinder from the column housing. Disconnect the lock cylinder wiring plug from the horn brush wiring connector.
To install:
9. Prior to installation of the lock cylinder, lubricate the cylinder cavity, including the drive gear, with Lubriplate® or equivalent.
10. To install the lock cylinder, turn the lock cylinder to the ON position, depress the retaining pin. Insert the lock cylinder housing into its housing in the flange casting. Be sure that the tab at the end of the cylinder aligns with the slot in the ignition drive gear.
11. Turn the key to the OFF position. This action will permit the cylinder retaining pin to extend into the cylinder casting housing hole.
12. Using the ignition key rotate the lock cylinder to ensure correct mechanical operation in all positions. Connect the key warning wire plug.
13. Install the steering column lower shroud. Install the steering wheel.
14. Check for proper vehicle operation in PARK and NEUTRAL. Also be sure that the start circuit cannot be actuated in DRIVE or REVERSE.
