Fuel Tank size

Post by Willie Two »

Can someone tell me how big the gas tank is on my 84 B2 and what type of MPG I could be expecting during winter driving. 2.8 L. Thanks to all who reply.

I thought all broncoIIs had a 23 gal tank. I think in real world MPG is 16-20. Depending of what kind of driving it could be higher or a little lower.

No, some of them have smaller tanks, but the '84 has a 23 gallon. My '88 with the 2.9 5 speed in the roughest of winter would sometimes dip to as low as 15mpg, but that is not common.

BTW, if you go to the Chilton's manual and do the carb tuneup, it will get you running very nicely. Do the whole thing though, not just bits and pieces. It will probably show you that you are running way rich. You should not have your mixture screws turned out farther that 3/4 to 1 1/2 turns from soft or 1/2 turn from rough. Do this along with the timing (10-12 degrees with distributor advance wire unplugged), I think you'll be amazed...

 I continue to find that the 2150s on these are set rich to cover alot of other issues and by adjusting them properly they will give you some very nice performance.

Carb rebuild

Post by Willie Two »

ruffinit; Thanks for the info, right now it is running black tailpipe rich. I've only been driving this B2 for a few months dealing with many issues including the carb which did not have any access to the mixture screws as they were sealed. I recently found another carb with mixture screws exposed. Biggest current problem is I have disconnected all the #### controls and only have the computer running the module. I still have a noticable miss in the engine even after changing the dist. assemble complete with new cap & rotor. I also put in new plugs and wires. I suspect it could be a valve train problem but I think I will change the coil just to eliminate it as a suspect. I also need to better understand what the control valve on the back of the carb does, currently unplugged, to the fuel system. Someone had mentioned it leans out the carb when the time is right ???? I may have to go back to square one, reconnect everything, and go forward from there. Timing is set as per your previous post but with many wires and electrical plugs disconnected the advance may not be working. I am thinking of doing the Duraspark mod once I find a doner Pinto or similar vehicle PLUS it is 30 degrees BELOW zero outside right now and working on my B2 is a bit of a challenge.

Well, I had a great post going and came back to find my session timed out and now have to retype it... Oh well. We're getting snow here again, and being a bit chilly there, I don't blame you for not wanting to work on the carb.. My 84 was running BAD when I first got ahold of it. Looked like someone had let their kid in there with dikes and disconnected everything. First thing I did was hook up ALL the stuff and make sure it was working. Then I went through and got the thing running right. It's a beautiful thing... When you don't know where you are, it's very difficult finding your way to where you want to go. I'd get the thing running right BEFORE I even started the DuraSpark conversion. BTW they say that the EEC in this vehicle was the most advanced at the time of it's build. The 2150 is also crowned as one of the best carbs also. I'm not sure what ctrl valve you're speaking of on the back of the carb, but here is a link to a very well written article on the 2150:

Unfortunately it does sound like you have a valve train problem though. Let me know how everything comes out.
