i have a 1988 fbII 4x4 with a 2.9 efi engine i want to replace the engine with another v6 engine what other v6 engine can i drop in with out swaping out the ecu or trannie , i like the efi less problems than a carb for me but if i have to go with a carb so be it
may i ask why you want to swap the engine? and also why you don't like efi? carbs are a pain in the ass at an angle...unless you're running propane.
if you change your motor, you have to change ecu - they are pretty much engine specific applications. if you want a carbed v6, a 2.8l v6 from the early bronco II or mustang II. if you want to go bigger, a 4.0 from an early exploder, ranger or aerostar will bolt to your tranny and motor mounts, but require the 4.0 ecu. you cannot carb a 4.0 or a 2.9 - no one makes intake manifolds for carburaters.
you know, with the right care and attention, the 2.9 will knock your socks off. what do you want to do with this vehicle?
btw, welcome to the site - i encourage you to take advantage of the search feature, there is a wealth of knowledge on this topic, already located at your fingertips.

WAIT! i just re-read your post and now understand you enjoy efi. i understand now... either swap in another 2.9, or go bigger with a 4.0. you'll need the wiring harness and ecu from the donor vehicle. talk to paul on this site, he did one recently, and discovered a few things you should know.
glad i re-read your post; i sounded like a douchebag!!
