Help diagnosing a problem

The vehicle will start, but die soon after. We are thinkin' it's a fuel filter...what you folks think?

The first thing I would do is check to see if you have any codes and go from there. I had that same thing happen to me once and it turned out to be the idle air control valve.

i agree with checking codes but to actually offer any assistance we need some more info i am assuming it is a 2.9 fuel injected engine but some things i do need to know is how well does it start do you have to crank it long or floor the gas and when it is running does it miss or smoke and how long does it stay running after you start it? will it continue to run if you feather the throttle? just a little more information would be helpful

alright, I'll get more info and let ya guys know. It's a 2.9 FI. My dad thinks it's the fuel filter(s), so I am gonna swap those out. I am unsure if it's throwing any CELs, but I'll look.

Update:

It's been sitting outside for prolly a week. I just went to start it up and it started up great and ran fine for about 10-15 seconds...then sputtered out real suddenly and died. I then started it again and it ran for about 4-5 seconds before dying, trying to apply the throttle to prevent stalling did not help. Further attempts to start it were unsuccesful. It has no problem turning over and sounds fine, which leads me to believe it is not getting fuel. I'm pretty sure it is not throwing any codes...but I can't start it now to confirm.

Edit: Went to depressurize it @ the fuel rail, and there was nothing in there...so for one reason or another it is not getting fuel. I can not; however, find the fuel filter.

fuel filter should be on frame rail or firewall sounds like you have a fuel pump relay kicking in when key is in on position but not while running if you have access to a fuel pressure regulator this would be a great test to run but a fuel pressure regulator should not be expensive or hard to install its all just finding where its at and plugging in

I had the same problem, thought it was the fuel pump in the tank, it ended up being the fuel pump on the rail. Most expensive one!!!! $100

Replace the fuel filter, that should be your first place to start.

Can you hear your fuel pumpS kick on and run???? the back pump could be giving you enough pressure to start it, but not enought to run it.

just turn your key over and you should hear BOTH pumps kicking on and off.....

if not there is your problem....

If you do hear both of them kicking on, you could have a stoped up filter ON THE PUMP it self, the one in the tank.
