I don't wanna break it....how does it come off?

Post by bower100 »

I'm pulling a motor and there's a few things on the '88 BII I can't get apart, or off :

-I removed the five bolts holding the fan blade clutch/pulley assy. to the water pump, but I can't pull it off the pump. Whats up with that? (I notice the shaft between the pulley and the fan clutch is hex shaped...do I put the pump impellar in a vise and un-screw the clutch from the impellar shaft)?

- how do you remove the wiring connectors from the fuel injectors? Looks like there's a metal spring clip ? ? ...mayby you pry it back with a tiny flatblade screwdriver? ( Really don't want to break 'em).

- Same deal on the fuel rail. how do you free the metal spring clips where it attaches to the injectors?

thanks, dave

Not sure about the injectors.

To remove the fan clutch, you need a special tool to hold the waterpump while you bread the hex nut loose. If I recall, it's reverse threads. I have been able to stick a screw driver between two of the waterpump pulley bolts to hold it, then break the fan loose, but is a major pain and involves lots of cursing and busted knuckles. You should be able to get a loaner from your local parts store (autozone).

To remove the fuel lines, you need another special tool. Ask at your local parts store.

Thanks nobody. It was just a wild guess that the thing unscrewed from the pump. I think I'll be able to get now that I know it screws off.

Thanks again.

I got the fuel lines ...garter spring expander tool gizmo.

How about the injectors and fuelrail...anybody?

yeah just slide the metal clips off and then they pull apart. Its pretty easy. Just dont drop them because that sucks when that happens!

Well, you can throw that unit away then, It is a viscous drive and heating it will ruin it. I may still have a brand new one left here, if you want I'll look. They are about 39 or so at Autozone

Oh no. The heat ruins the liquid inside? Whats it do, make it thicker or thinner?

I wonder if there's a chance the heat didn't travel into the clutch part to the point of ruining the fluid?

Thanks for the info. This was on my donor trucks motor, so I'm gonna compare how it acts to the one in the Bronco.
