Gstank fuelpump not working. = poor running? ?

Post by bower100 »

When I pulled my gastank fuel level sender unit out to see whats up with it, I discovered the pump isn't working. With 12 volts on it it doesn't run.

So, the question is, can a Bronco actually run without that pump supplying pressure to the frame rail mounted one?

I know the tank pump is a "low pressure" pump, but still....

As far as the sender unit.... man I played with that thing for 3 hours.... trying to make it work consistantly.

Problem is the slide-wire is worn where the "brush" contact travels along it. Mainly from 1/2 tank to empty. ( And thats exactly how the guage on the dash works ... full to 1/2 works ... 1/2 to empty doesn't).

Plus the float pivot arm is sloppy loose in the plastic case that houses the slidewire/brush assy. Makes for a very difficult "fix". ( I'm a cheap ba$tard).

Oh well, looks like $100 for a new one.

Do you have any good junkyards? $100 for a sending unit sucks, but it's one of those things that after it's fixed, you'll wonder why you didnt' do it sooner.

As for the pump in the tank, yes your motor will run. I know a lot of the V8 swaps use only the pump on the frame rail without a feeder pump. I'd have to recommend replacing it though.

MIne would not run in the heat of west North Carolina. It ran like a top in the rain and in the coolness of the morning, as soon as the day started heating up it would quit. It was obviously vapor locking from drawing a vacuum on the line for such a distance. Even with a brand new pump on the frame rail it would not get above an idle, replaced the tank unit and it runs as well at 110º as it does at 25º. Your results may vary according to temperature and altitude. Batteries not included, some assembly required.

Picked up the sender U. and pump assy from the local Napa store ....for $130 bucks. Could be gotten a bit cheaper but Napa had it that afternoon....no one else could,

I did a few checks and some extra work tonight, so the things not in and running 'till tomorrow.
I:
1. Wanted to know for sure the new pump got power. With a meter, I see a quick 12 volts at the tank wire connector when keying on....just like the other pump does.(You can hear the frame pump cycle)

2. Wanted to see the guage work before hanging tank back up. I plugged sender U. into wire connector and worked it through it's travel....GOOD! IT WORKS!

3. Wanted to freshen up tank hanger straps, tank and general area around tank. So, brushing off rust, applying Extend and then a coat of black oil base enamel .... I now must wait 'till it all dries.

Oh well. Progress takes time.

On the pump not working... I was really hoping my anemic Bronco would magically transform itself into a powerful beast. ( It runs so darned sluggishly). I was hoping only one pump = low fuel pressure while running under load and was maybe starving the injectors. Remember I was the guy asking about cleaning injectors and so forth and I haven't done it yet. Tomorrow will tell.
