electrical issues

Post by shortfuse »

picked up an '84 B2 a couple of days ago. Severely lacks power, and electrical has been hacked&slashed. Found when driving with accelerator held steady if i switch the heater fan from highest setting to the next lower setting it significantly loses power. Switch it back to high and it's like an extra 20hp. I'm thinkig maybe something crucial has shorted , or mistakenly been connected to the heater fan resistors? Hoping somebody can help!

I suspect the TFI module is the culprit. ;)

Sounds like someone plumbed the heater fan into the carb like a blower. Thus giving you the 20 HP at full fan speed. :redneck:

well, it's not the TFI,replaced it, no difference. replaced cap, rotor, leads, plugs, alternator, volt. regulator, colant temp sensor and battery. getting extremely poor gas mileage(80litres=270kms) and still no power. thinking maybe the fuel press. regulator or plugged exhaust may be the issue. Getting frustrated now, maybe i should of listened to my buddy and bought a toyota 4x4.

hmmmm..... I still suspect the ignition system....coil, or pickup? I've seen this a few times and it was the ignition module.

hey all im new here but i might have a suggestion i got my 84 bII with serious electrical gremlins in the ignition system so i switched it over to duraspark from a 77 mustang II got all the parts including old style carb and distributerfor about $100 has ran flaw3less for the past year and a half and the wiring and carb swap only took a couple hours if that

replaced coil, checked timing. found a single blue wire near trans unplugged, can't find where it goes.still can't figure why i get more power with the blower motor\fan on full. resistors checked out fine switch is a little discolored. seems an engine component is getting a better path to ground when blowers in on. all i've got is haynes wiring diagrams could use some good ones.

Possible check your body to engine ground and your engine to frame grounds. Definitely baffling, never heard of such a thing. Normally the heater fan would create a load on the motor at full speed.(alternator)
