transfer case problem

ok i just bought an '87 BII, automatic. got it at a steeeaaaal... anyway;

when i put it into gear (any gear) from park it makes a harsh jump w/ a loud metal-to-metal sound effect. it also shifts fairly rough w/ less of the same sound effect. the guy i bought it from (old hippie named kurt) said his best guess was the transfer case chain needed to be replaced. i've got a spare one for it already, but is that even the problem? anyone else experienced such things?

My bet would be on driveshaft. The stock CV shaft is prolly toasted.

The chain only operates the front wheel drive and doesn't turn until engaged. My experience with the 7.5 rear is that the crosspin will wear away and provide play in the rear giving you the clunking noise. I have had these pins wear almost halfway through before I have replaced them. Randy's ring and pinion recommended the stock-limited slip unit to help the pin last longer. Jack the whole rear off the ground safely and twist the rear wheel back and forth with the rig in park or in gear. Check the play before the driveline turns.

everything seems to be in good shape after the transfer case. i did however note two things when i jacked it up though:

i forgot how shitty it was to not have posi,

and the stock CV even LOOKS worthless.

but nothing's worn badly at all after the t-case. so... ???

so if the chain doesn't move until 4wd's engaged, what DOES move in the transfer case in 2wd? and why is there a noise that sounds very very much like a chain slap...?

it's not the rear axles, or differential, or driveshaft. it's either the t-case or the transmission.

The only moving part is the input and output in the T-case. The only thing I can think of to check is the T-case oil pump. You have to split the case for that.

Not sure the pump would make a slapping noise. I don't think it can if you are sitting still when you move from forward to reverse gears. My thoughts would be with Joel, If you hammer on the throttle from a dead takeoff does it vibrate a bit and smooth out just before it goes to second(I'm presuming automatic tranny here)? Or if not vibrate does it make a wierd noise sort of like two pieces of metal being drug across the edges of each other?

well i finally drove it farther than circling around my neighborhood today, and i'm 99.9% sure it's the tranny goin south. i know i know, "god-damn newb needs to get his ears checked" haha. it sounds much more like gears slipping to catch (like the planetary and sun gears are fucked) than a chain goin' bad.

sooo... anyone got a spare auto trans? in GOOD shape?? AAAND willing to ship if not in the area??

NOt sure if it will work for u but i have an auto tranny and t-case from a 4liter ranger.

I'm having this same problem here with a weird metallic sound and vibration when I start from a stop. What could that sound be?

How much do I want for the tcase and tranny? That depends on who has to pull them from the truck, you or me.
