If it's a 2.9L then I would check the timing.

I would start by pulling codes to see if anything comes up. you can have it done at autozone for free. also checking the iqnition system to make sure you are getting a strong spark would be a good idea if no codes come up. the next place I would go from there would be to check the timing.

"rev limiter" The computer only lets the engine turn a certain amount of rpms ...revolutions per minute...revs. It kills the ignition intermittently so you can't over rev the motor and blow it up.

Sorry I don't want to confuse you. I was just being a wise-in-heimer. :D

Follow DBrown's advise. I would also check fuel pressure, fuel filter, and fuel regulator.

Good quality plug wires, plugs and a distributor cap would be the first to look at. And I don't mean that cheap stuff from Autozone or Advance either. If you can find them put Autolite wires on

dont waist any money till you pull codes. could be a # of thing's. efi is similar to the human brain. everything is controled by the computer recieving signals from various sensor components.

How do you pull the codes on a 86 model? I thought that that started on 96 an up models.
