4-speed 5-speed to tranfercase adapters

Post by mccutcheon4 »

Do each of the transmission types used in Bronco IIs require a unique
adapter to bolt up to the transfer case ?
My sons 84 B2 has the 4-speed OD and we want to swap to the 5-speed.

Thanks

I could be wrong, but I thought that all of the tcases had the same bolt pattern.

I'm guessing the transfer cases are all the same pattern, but the transmissions is what I am wondering about. It seems very unlikely they would all take the same t-case adapter. I have a couple 2WD five speeds and would like to bolt one of them up in place of the 4-speed OD.

The 4-speed is a real turd, 4th is overdriven, and I don't think 3rd is a one to one ratio.

Thanks

The Key is the transmission tail-shaft, and housing. I would presume if the 5 speed was ever in a 4wd then you need the rear stuff from that version..

Hope I didn't confuse ya on that.

That is what I thought. I was hoping to get lucky and just be able to use some of the junk we already have.

All the transfer cases used on BIIs and Rangers (and even explorers) have the same bolt pattern, and will mount up to any tranny in a BII or Ranger. Unless the 2wd 5 speed is from a BII, it will not fit, or convert. If it was from a BII, it would be okay, the 2wds just had dummy cases, the rangers had a conical tailshaft housing and a yoke/flange and no dummy case. If the transmission came out of a 2wd BII, it is the same as a 4wd tranny. If you are swapping for a trans out of a ranger or explorer, count on it not working due to the tailshaft differences. I am pretty darn sure that the output shaft on the 2wd is shorter than the 4wd (somebody please correct me if they Know that that is wrong), and you really don't wanna replace that. Unless the output shafts are the same, you will not be able to just take off the 2wd tailhousing and bolt on the 4wd tailhousing (also since there were 4 5speed transmission offered in the Bronco II, TK4, TK5, FM145, FM146, I think that the M5OD was offered in the BII, but I am not positive, it has a cast one piece case anyway).

Thanks, that helps. We have a 86 Ranger 4X4 for a parts truck, it has a 5-speed. I assume that we will be able to bolt the entire trans and transfer case up to my sons 2.8 powered B2, is that correct ?

Is there a difference in the way the hydraulic clutch line attaches to the trans ?

Thanks again

you'd have to look and see. You might want to switch clutch lines from the master down and keep the slave from the 86 in the 86 transmission It should bolt up, but check that the input shafts are the same length. I am pretty sure they are (have seen TK4s and TK5s which came with 2.8s swapped onto a 2.9), and I think they are both crankshaft pilot bearings.

Is the 4 speed broken? Cause if its not, I would not bother swapping. The FM145 isn't as strong as the TK4. If its broke, the do it, its free. Hope that helped. Any more questions?
