Cheap Bronco II Mudd Basher

Post by pappy535 »

I just bought a 88 bronco II over the week end for $100 it has 170,000 miles on it ...paint is down past clear...no rust...5spd...pretty much plain. This truck runs well BUT is in the need for some good tires and a decent body or suspension lift. I also own a 89 bronco II with 80,000 miles on it and it is mint although the suspension is some what saggy and i am wanting to know if lifting the BII is more then it seems....is this a strong suspension or no and what type of lift/tire combos do you perfer? This truck will be a daily driver and a weekend mud bash truck. If you will please fill me in.

Lifting the front suspension requires the use of a bunch of drop brackets. Aside from being pretty expensive, the drop brackets tend to crack after a few years of hard wheeling. Then again, some folks never have a problem.

The front suspension is a dana 28 TTB(twin traction beam). It will hold up to 31's, but any more than that, and you'll start breaking a few axles. You can upgrade to a dana 35 TTB which will stand up to 35's. The TTB axles aren't sealed to water/mud very well. If everything is in good shape, they'll be ok.

I always recommend the straight axle swap. It's cheaper in the long run, and far far better. It does require a little fab work though.

on my 86 broncoII i cut the front fenders a bit and ran 30x11.50 swampers. they didn't hit on the front, but did rub the inside of the wheel wells.... swampers are noisey.... i just did a 4" susp lift and i like it.... articulates well and drives decent with 10.50x31 BFG's... haven't tried the BFG's offroad yet
