electronic plug on rear diff?

Post by tonymasone »

I noticed a cable and an electronic looking plug going into my rear differential at the top, just curious as to what that is for?

Or is it a speed sensor?
I know the 91 Explorers had them, but don't remember if they were on the 90 B2's.

The plug on the rear diff is put there for the rear brake anti lock system. It is a speed sensor but not the one the vehicles use for speedo or computer to run the engine.

This sensors only function in life is to tell the RWABS computer (usually located drivers side inside the "B" pillar) what speed the rear axle is turning or weather the real wheels are locked when you apply the brakes. If not used your RWABS won't activate which in my personal opinion RWABS in a BII is a good recipe for an accident to happen. I have yet to see a RWABS work properly.

Yep Fords RWABS is a real sore point among ford enthusiasts. I have had more complaints about bad brakes because of the RWABS than any other system.

My biggest complaint was "The brakes are spongy.. Yep I agree it was a waste of time.
