shifter turns???

just to add another thing to fix on my bronco 2.i actualy got it runing to try and figure out if the guy i bought it from was feeding me a line of s***.looks like its piston rings and not just a head gasket.anyways i was shifting into reverse and when i pushed it to the right and down to try and get into reverse the entire shift lever twisted like i was trying to tighten it.i didnt get a chance to look at it but i was just wonder if anybody could tell me how it is atached/held to the transmission or what could have happened???

is it the whole shifter or just the knob. on my 90 eb bII the knob spun around and i just replaced it with a new one. ford just pressed the oe knob on.
