engine swap please help 1989 bronco II

Post by stevesblazer »

My friend has a 1989 bronco II 2.9 .. it either has a cracked head or a blown head gasket. :mad2: would u rather take the engine apart and put a new gasket in ... or just drop in a new 2.9
and does anyone know about how long it would take (hours :usa: ) to swap engines

would u be able to do it in a weekend

I wouold recomend a new 2.9. Some have had luck w/ just redoing a head gasket, most have not. The 2.9 casting is rather weak around the bolts...and are VERY prone to cracking there when re-installed

If you bust it, you can do it in a weekend. You will need help, and you need to get along w/ your helper.....

Mine took 4 days cause she got on my nerves.

well i know the 2.9 would be faster but i would do the 4.0 swap. the wiring takes some time to work out but in the end it would definatly be worth it, mine has a 4.0 and i am so glad i opted for the 4.0 inxstead of the 2.9 that it had in when mine blew up....... but with the 4.0 and 2.9 swap i did everything just bolted right in no problems, and i actually love driving the bronco II now with the 4.0 installed as compared to the 2.9 i had.........

If you do the 4.0 swap into an 89 or 90 B2, then it's a plug and play swap AS LONG AS you get ALL the underhood wiring.

Simply remove the 110 pin connector w/ a 10mm bolt in it, and install the 4.0 underhood harness. You also need to go through the firewall on the pass side w/ the 2 rubber grommets...again, remove the 2.9 stuff and install the 4.0 stuff. Use 91-94 for this type swap to work.

But remeber this....91 and 92 4.0's have a round engine to underhood harness connector and 93 and 94 have a square one. They don't interchange (Actual square peg/ round hole deal), but are wired exactly the same. :wtf: Why they swapped the shape of the connector I do not know
