4 X 4 Question

Post by CritterGitter »

My son just got a 88 BII 2.9l, auto tranny 4 X 4 with manual hubs. With the hubs locked and the 4 X 4 shifter (floor shifter) in both 4 wheel drive positions it does not seem as though it is in 4 wheel drive. The light on the dash lights up, but the front tires won't !! (We tried it on ice, lot's of rear end spin, but no front end spin.) Has anybody got any ideas. We are Ford Newbees so any help sure would be appreciated. Thanks.

One of or both hubs are no tlocking. lift the left front wheel and with it in 4 wheel drive and both hubs locked turn the tire. It should click and lock in making the axle part that is visible at the knuckle turn. Then if that works try the other side too. If they both lock and turn the axles the there may be a Tcase problem. Could either be a broken chain or a shifter fork not engaging the sliding coller inside. It would still show up at the lights as being in 4x4 though

I tried quite a few different things that people wrote about. I just put it in 4-wheel drive before supper and it now works fine. I am new to the lock-out hubs, I wonder if my only problem was that I did not have them engaged properly? Works fine now. I did change one of the u-joints on the front axle. Now that was interesting !!!! I just checked the other side and I have to do it too. Guess I get to practise the "skills" I learned from the first one !! LOL Thanks again folks.

If they are all junked up then they will stick when you try to lock them. Buying new/used for cheap. I think I even have some laying around that I cannot use anymore.
