I am sorry about the question, but I have no where else to go for help, the rest of the internet is crap considering my dilemma. I am borrowing my aunts old car, a 96 mercury sable. It has the 3.0 Vulcan V6. The problem is that the trans is slipping. Not badly, but enough to notice and make me weary. It accelerates from a stop just fine, but shifts kinda slowly to second and then to third, but no problems to OD. Also, when I go around a corner, and give it throttle to accelerate comming out of a turn, if I give it too much gas, it sticks between gears, the engine will rev, then it will drop the gear and the car will jolt as it goes into gear (acts kinda like it is low on trans fluid). I have been pretty nice to the car in the few days I have had it trying not to fuck it up. I checked the trans fluid, both not running, and running in park, and the dipstick shows fluid level above the crosshatched area. It acts like its low on fluid, but it shows having more than needed. Will a transmission fluid additive like slick 50 or something help this a little, or is it more serious than that. Thanks for the help, and again, sorry about it not being a BII question.

Generally speaking additives will never help, and some can even cause more problems....
As for the tranny, definately sounds like it's on the way out. I don't think there is anything you can do. Is it going to be a problem if it dies on your shift? If so, I'd quit driving it.
I would expect most tranny shops would give a free inspection. Don't expect them to give you a diagnosis, but they should be able to give you more qualified answer as to whether the tranny is toast or not.
If you're really lucky, it's just a modulator or something.

well, I've done some reading and it seems that other people have the same problem. The trans doesn't slip once in gear, just has some trouble shifting from 1-2 and 3-4, so I think the clutches are okay, but I read somewhere that an engagement piston or something like that gets stuck or worn and that could be the problem? I don't know. It isn't too horrible, and I only have it until saturday, at which time I have to return it so my cousin can drive it, so if it can go til then, it'll be his problem (he and my aunt can better afford to have car trouble than me, I have NO money). I think it'll last til then if I drive real nice on it. anyway, thanks a lot for the advice nobody, I appreciate it.
