302's through 81 used the 28oz imbalance.
5.0L's 82 and up used the 50oz imbalance.

I believe the actual change occured in 81.

Also note that all 351W used the 28oz flywheel.

Along with the 50 imbalance, they moved the dipstick to the block, and used a one piece rear main seal among a few other things. That's why I like to refer to these engines as 5.0L.

So you already know that, and you need 50oz flywheel. Well now you have a choice between 157 tooth, and a 164 tooth. You of course want the 164 tooth for the larger clutch. But ultimately this depends on the bellhousing you are using. Since you are using the older bellhousing, I think it's safe to assume it requires the 164 tooth flywheel. I'm not sure what the aluminum bellhousings used.

So actually, I don't know.....but EBSTEVE does. I would look for mid 80's F-series trucks with manual transmission. I'm going to be fighting this battle myself some day. I think EBSTEVE actually had his flywheel rebalanced.

You can tell the difference visually by looking at the cast in weight on the flywheel. Make sure to count the teeth....Can Kentucky folk count to 164? :finger:

thanks, I knew what I needed I just wasn't sure what years and vehicles would work with the old bell housing.

just for shits and giggles......would any 5.0L flywheel and clutch work with the NP435 as long as it fit in the bell housing? I know some are smaller, I was just wondering if it will work with the input shaft and linkage.

I believe the NP435 did come with 2 different input shaft lengths. My guess is it could be the difference between big block and small block, or deisel. I'm not really sure. Chances are it's the same.

If you use the smaller flywheel, you will need the smaller bellhousing as well, otherwise your starter won't enguage the flywheel. You should hold out the for the 11" clutch. There are tons of people that have done it. I'm sure you can find one.

I guess I should start looking now so I have one when I need it. :idea:

well I think I might be able to disprove your theory on the BB and SB difference. I swapped the input shaft from a SB NP435 into a BB NP435. and mine is working fine. I basicly swapped everything from one tranny to the other excluding the output shaft. if you want I can measure if I take it apart to get the new Bronco running. I can tell you this though, the 2wd rear pattern NP435 came from a 68 F100 4x4 and the 4wd pattern NP435 came from a 79 Bronco. if that makes any difference. this is why I am looking into the swap.......I think I might just part out the BII and keep the parts that will give me upgrades.

I have already decided before I found out what part I needed that if I could use the 11" flywheel I will would just because I hate the smell of a clutch burning. also I am having a dilema about the rear fenders.....I think someone might have trimmed the front of them so they could fit larger tires. I am debating opening them up if this turns out to be true. I will have it home a little after lunch tomarrow, so I will try to post up some more pics of the jem I got a hold of :cool:

What do you want to know, what are you trying to do? There is no stock parts that will give you 164 teeth, 11" clutch (at least the old style that is not internal slave cyl) and 50oz balance.

sorry, I was asking if there was a flwheel and clutch that would mate a 50oz 5.0L to a NP435 with mech. linkage. also what truck to ask for it from the parts house.

I think Nobody is right, I had a conversation a long time ago with a friend and he told me exactly what I needed but I forgot. and I couldn't find a post he had over on Pirate. I think what he told me was the same thing, and I just wanted to make sure before I bolted a bunch of stuff together and after failing I then started to smash things with a BFH because I got mad they didn't work.........

I asked the question on pirate and Nobody was messing with me a little......that was my excuse for the wierd topic start.

do you have a final answer on the whole question? I would like to hear what you think.

I am putting a 5.0L in a 71 EB with a NP435

Well in my digging I found that Ford used 3 different casting #'s on the flywheels of FI trucks with 5L.
E8TR AA
KE4 710
E1TE AA
I had one of each in my hands at one point or another and the pressure plate that I have would not bolt up to any of them. I wanted to use the old style with mechanical linkage (basically 93HO 5L in front of the flywheel and 73 F100 behind the flywheel).
I was told by many people that there was a factory application that would allow the use of an 11" clutch and so on, but I have also heard that Santa Clause is real :confused:

Ok so to the point, in the month I spent screwing around trying to find a Ford part I proved to myself that there is not a factory part that will work, so what I found is that if you want an 11" mechanical clutch and a 5L you have to either drill a newer flywheel for the older style pressure plate (I did not like this idea) or have your flywheel matched balanced. I had mine matched balanced at Perpetual balance in Mukilteo WA, it was $50 and was done the next morning.
Another thing to remember is that the 5L block does not have the holes for the clutch linkage to bolt up to, I made a bracket out of a chunk of steel and a few nuts but WH sells one (#8197 EFI equalizer conv. bracket $19.99)

I don't know if you can use a new pressure plate with the old linkage, the clutch side should be the same but the throw out bearing side might be different due to the internal slave cyl.
I had a new clutch sitting on the shelf so I used it and never gave the new style stuff a second thought.

I got it!

I talked to my friend today on the phone and he said that you need to use the 164 tooth 50oz. 11" flywheel from a eirly 80's (after the 50oz change) flywheel then use a 3 prong 11" clutch. he said the difference in the 3 prog and the other one is the difference in the throw. if you use the one from the same 80's hydro you will not have enough peddle to make the clutch work.

Well acording to EBSTEVE, the older pressure plates don't bolt up to the newer flywheels. Also, those 3 prong pressure plates suck. However, the clutch I bought from www.tomsbroncoparts.com was a replacement for the 3 prong clutch.

As far as there not being enough throw, I think I could deal with that one way or another. I'm not sure I believe it though. Did you catch that steve said the 5.0L lacks the spot on the block to bolt the clutch linkage, but you can get a a bracket for it.

yeah, I that also. I am going to look into it but if I can make one I will go that rought.

the clutch looks like a good deal how does the pressure in yours feel with it?

My clutch feels great. About the same as the EB

Wilber has a 5.0L and NP435. Maybe if he stumbles in here he can tell us what flywheel he used.
