4.0 swap into a 86 ranger 4x4

Post by kvnvi »

Hey guys, first off your board rocks!!! I love it here! I was just wondering what all i need and have to do to put a 4.0 in my 86 ranger 4x4. it's a 2.9 5 speed swb, that i bought for 800 bucks. The 2.9 is fairly strong, but it rattles like hell. I bet it has 200k plus on it. I am going to aquire a motor out of a 94 explorer. What wiring do i need and how do i tie it in with my 86's wiring? All the wiring is gone from the explorer. Will i also have to change fuel lines, and can i keep the belt system off of the 2.9 or will i have to have the accessories off of the explorer? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I think Dbrown is the only one here that's done the 4.0L swap. Check out his write-up here

You're going to need the harness and computer. For the most part, they should be contained systems, with only a few wires to splice...power, grounds etc...

I think the 5.0L swap is 6 or 8 wires to splice.

I might be able to do yours and your brothers at the same time. I am leaving on fri to go to FL and will not be back for 2 wks. but I had intended on starting on his when I get back. it would probably be easier for me to do them both at the same time if you want me too. are you getting the motor that your brother got the harness from? also what tranny are you planning on using?

I have a ECM but I think it is fried but you might be able to get away with it untill you can find another one. it is the one that was in the BII when it was up there. just need to make sure if you find another one that it is from a 90-94.
