Noisy engine/clutch

Post by K4irk »

I just bought a 1990 with manual transmission. It appears to have about 117,000 miles on it. Upon cranking it sounds like something is up with the flywheel or starter. Kind of a metal scraping sound. Once running, engine/transmission is noisy at idle or running but gets quiet when the clutch pedal is pushed in.

Any ideas?

You might have two different issues. Pull the starter and inspect the flywheel teeth. If the starter is not engaging well, you can get a tiny bit of adjustment at the starter bolts. Common for oil to leak down on the starter and gum things up.

The manual transmissions are notoriously junk. I suspect yours is shot. When you press the clutch, it stops the transmission internals from spinning and the bearing noise stops. Probably time to search for a replacement.
