front main seal leak

do you know if the front main seal can be replaced by removing the balancer and pulling the seal out, or does the front engine cover have to be removed and the seal come out the back of it?

you can do it from the outside, there was a tool to remove it and install it. it's in deep.just kinda note where it is before you remove it.
