oil dipstick tube
oil dipstick tube
I am new here and was hoping someone can help me with a problem. I have a 88 bronco ii I went to chance the oil and pull the dipstick out when the whole tube came out with it . My question is there a o-ring at the base of the tube. I was going to order a new tube at the dealer but the could not tell me if it was press fit or if it has o-ring. The tube is $90 and nonrefundable I would like to order everything at once if there is more parts needed. thanks for any help .

its a pressed fit.i havent seen one yet that has a O-ring on it. auto tranny,yes

$90 is pretty steep, especially when it is not refundable and a lot of the dealerships don't do a very good job of ordering older parts.
Dave is right, or at least the 2.9 in the back yard is a press in.
Try to find a straight punch the won't quite fit in the bottom of the tube, bevel the end of the punch so it will start into the tube and tap it in then remove the punch and bevel the end of the tube a little and tap it into place. You are only interested in expanding the bottom of the tube a couple thousands of an inch to get it to stay in place.
You can also get after market tubes from an auto parts store that are chrome most generally, they require that you cut them to the same length as the stock, and then tap it into place.
You might also be able to use red Lock-Tite on the tube if it fits snug enough. Red is permanent on most metal surfaces and requires 300 plus degrees to soften it up enough for the removal of the part.

theres no FREEKING O-ring. i just had this one ALL apart and there was NO ORING. and when i put it together theres still no oring

Looked again no place for a o-ring. The arguement I read here was a repeat of what I heard at the dealer between the two parts guys that caused me to wonder if there was a o-ring. Thanks for the help.

THE TUBE RUSTED OFF FLUSH ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE BLOCK DIDN'T SEE IT TILL THE NEW TUBE I ORDER COME IN AND IT WAS A COUPLE INCHES LONGER. HOW MUCH OF THIS TUBE HANGS OUT ON THE INSIDE OF THE BLOCK? I JUST PICKED UP A PAN GASKET AND WAS HOPING I COULD KNOCK IT OUT FROM THE INSIDE BECAUSE THE MOTOR ONLY HAS 80,000 MILES ON IT,RUNS STRONG. IF I HAVE TO PULL IT OUT TO PUT THE DIP STICK TUBE IN I WILL WANT TO REBUILD IT INSTEAD OF BUYING A LIFT KIT OR DOING A S.A.S.

ya might be able to pry it out with a screwdriver from the out side.
if not if your takin the pan off,push it up through

If you can't use a drift pin from the inside the block to drive it out and you can't do anything with the top you might try this:
Cut the tube off at the bulge and go get a large Easy out. (sized for the inside diameter of the tube) Put the easy out in the tube and try to loosen the tube. Once you loosen the tube use some vice grips and any other method you can dream up to work the tube up and out.

I, have in the past, (not on a 2.9) tapped the remaining piece down into the pan, then used a strong magnet to move the piece to the drain hole for extraction. This technique works, but is sometimes time consuming and can be real messy.
If you use this method, you will want a very strong magnet to start, place it on the bottom of the pan near the dipstick tube hole, this is to catch the stub when it goes into the bottom of the pan. Then it is a simple process of moving the magnet toward the drain plug hole to remove it.
You already know this, but as a reminder, DRAIN THE OIL AND LEAVE THE PAN DRAIN PLUG OUT TILL YOU HAVE RETRIEVED THE STUB.
