1985 B2 project

Post by cajun66 »

This is my 1985 that I got recently. The automatic transmission slips and the gas tank has a hole in it. The 2.8 was rebuilt 2 years ago and has less than 20 hours on it.
To avoid dealing with the A4LD, I got a FM145 5spd, flywheel, plate, clutch, master cylinder, pedal assembly, and starter from an 87 donor 4x4 B2.
The idea is to build a mild trail ready daily driver so I can use the CJ5 for fun.

Here are the first pics:

More to come as I take more pictures.

When I got my BII, the auto tranny slipped too, but that was after I replaced the ATF and the filter. So I put a bottle of Lucas transmission stop slip in it and anothe quart of fluid and it works great now. Well for the most part for being 22 yrs old and never replaced or rebuilt.

Going for the 5spd for reliability. And cost.

Here's all the stuff I got for my 100 bucks: (Ignore the saddle bag)

We have driveshaft jigs at work. I can modify the length if needed. My only concern is if the transfer case from the A4LD will fit onto the FM145.

I was able to crank the motor today. Sounded great even if it idled a little low. Automatic slips as bad as the previous owner said. Gas tank is in real bad shape. A friend is going to pick up a poly tank soon.

As of 11/28/09, we got the A4LD on the ground and all associated hardware from the automatic removed.
The Transfer case from the A4LD mounted right up to the FM145 like it was meant to go there.
Replaced the slave cylinder as well.

Ranger Dave was on the money regarding the drive shafts. I am going to pull the front off the donor truck this week and machine a spacer to make up the 3 inch difference on the rear shaft. I'll post a pic and dimensions if any one is interested when it's done.
I'm going to try to swap the pedal assemblys without pulling the cast aluminum bracket. It looks like I can remove the E-clip and slide the pedals in. The new shift lever assembly was a chore to locate but I did find one and should have it tomorrow.
I was pleased to find out that the 86 tank sending unit will fit the 85 tank and, with a few modifications, will work just fine. I'll finish the tank this weekend and have it installed next week as well as the low pressure electric fuel pump and all new fuel lines.
Mounted my 235/75/15 recaps and decided they're too big for my taste.

I don't want to lift the truck so I'll go down to 215/75/15 tires and see what happens.

Got the front drive shaft out of the donor truck 2 weeks ago. And my buddy started on the adapter:

Started with this:

And just need to index and tap the holes:

Fits great.

Also got the pedals in now. :redneck: It was harder than I'd expected. Had to pull the brake booster and drop the steering column so the aluminum bracket would rotate enough to get the clutch pedal started. Got that done and tightened the steering shaft while I was there. I still need to put the instrument cluster back in.

Good news. The transmission cross member is interchangeable. Got the transmission and transfer case in today.

All of the hardware is in now. Took 4 hours to finish installing the gas tank and stuff.
I need to add fluid to the drive train and tighten the cross member.

The engine runs but doesn't idle well. I'll tackle that once everything else is done.

Took it down the road. The transmission swap was a total and utter success. :D

The little V6 has a dead miss in one of the cylinders but since it's been sitting up since 1998 I'm not surprised. The motorcraft carb doesn't look bad even on the inside but I also have a new Holley 2bl that I can fall back on. Going to do a compression test first to eliminate a stuck valve and then go through the ignition to find the miss. More to come.

Took advantage of the dark to check and see if the wires were arcing outside. Look fine. I'll check it with the timing light tomorrow.
