Probably the best advise that can be given, put in a 91 or newer 4.0.
Don't get me wrong, the 2.9 was the mainstay of the B2 and was/is a real screamer. It has been termed as a near bullet proof 4x4 engine, and from past experience with them, I have to say that is a correct analogy. They were produced for 6 years and served the purpose well but are past there prime, with a considerable amount of time and expense you can wring out about 250 HP. The question then becomes one of economics and finding the parts that are needed to get the job done.
Past experience has shown they come in 2 distinct varieties, those that were great engines and put out every bit of the advertised 145 HP and those that were boat anchors and just barely made 100 HP. These differences were caused by differences in production from year to year, with the 86 and 87 being the most common to have better HP. The early 2.9's had a shorter deck height than the latter ones and also came with a larger diameter throttle body plus a different cam geometry. The downside of the early 2.9 was the thin walled heads that were prone to cracking, most of the 2.9's you find in wrecking yards suffer from this and people running them till the coolant that got into the oil, and eaten up the bearings and ruining a good engine. World parts had/has a cure with thicker walled heads, but they cost $300+, for that expense, you can pick up a good running 4.0 and put it in place of the 2.9.
There are a few wiring issues involved, but as you have a 90 B2 they are not many, the link explains what is needed and how to go about it.

Read other posts as to why people are leaving the 2.9 and going to the 4.0, there are thousands of reasons, probably the most common is the availability of parts and the fact that there are a couple million more 4.0's than 2.9's.
