Carb 302 & C4 in Bronco II, Can't shift Trans by shift lever

Post by Novanut »

I'm new here & I have a question I was hoping somene could help me with.
I recently purchased a 1988 Bronco II with a carbureted 302 and I was told a C4 automatic.
After installing an in-tank fuel pump, pressure gauge and regulator, I think I can get it to start.

The issue I have now is that the trans seems to be stuck in reverse.
It has a B&M Megashifter installed but the cable was/is fried.

I disconnected the shift cable at the transmission. The shift lever on the drivers side of the trans is in the 2 o'clock position. I have tried to move it by hand and it won't go towards either 3 o'clock or 1 o'clock.

It has two levers coming out of the trans. One which was not connected, I assumed to be a kickdown. That sits outboard from the trans and the trans shift lever (or that's what I believe anyway).

I am still trying to start the truck and am not concerned right now with the linkage hook up. I just need to get the trans shifted into either park or neutral so I can start it. I don't believe it has a neutral safety switch. When I did get it to start and gave it some rpms (it feels as if it has a mild torque converter in it) it tried to move in reverse.

I cannot seem to get the shift lever off the trans to move either way by hand. It seems to "ratchet" towards 3 o'clock, but then returns to the original position. It does not ratchet at all towards one o'clock. Any ideas? Desperately wanting to get my 302 2wd Bronco running!

I notice yiour shift lever points at 6 o'clock and the kickdow at 9o'clock or so. My shift lever points at 2 o'clock and the kickdown at 3 o'clock or so.

I finally got the shift mlever to move through it's full range with a little light tap from the mallet. I am assuming it may loosen up as it gets back on the road and gets shifted regularly.

I also need to get a new cable for my Megashifter. 4' length would be long but would allow ample routing length to assure I can run it away from the exhaust without kinks (thge one on there now got friend by the dual pipes.
