POOR POWER
POOR POWER
I bought a 90 B2. Prev. owner said engine was knocking so he had it rebuilt, put new tires on, and painted it. I got the truck with a trans problem. Trans would go into 4low (not 4 hight) with the button in the dash but you would have to take the transfer case off and put it into 2wd manually. With that being said. I don't know if the problem is in the engine or lack of experience with the B2, but it is the SLOWEST vehicle I have ever had. including my 88 ext. cab, long bed, f150 with dual tank etc. This b2 has no pick up, takes forever and a day to get to 60 and gets about 12 mpg. Is this common in this type of vehicle or can it have something to do with the tranny? or the rebuilt engine. ANY advice would be helpful.
Re: POOR POWER
Hmmm... first off I would get me a new/rebuilt transfer case motor so that I could switch the thing in and out of 4wd. Secondly, when these are running properly they're like 4wd sports cars. They're quick, manuverable and run down the interstate really nicely. Notice I said quick, not fast. You should arguably get 16-22 mpg on the highway.. I would say 16-20 with the OD auto in 2wd.
That 2.9 has some issues.
It looks good though!

Re: POOR POWER
So have you decided to fix and sell it? Just saw it for sale in the Sell forum.. You'd be missing out on a great ride once it's fully functioning.
Re: POOR POWER
If I can't sell the truck. I would definitely like to sell it. What I need is maybe a guess on a diagnoses of the problem. This is Not quick, fast, or any one of the synonyms. HORRIBLE gas mileage. Could it be a problem with the rebuilt engine? It feels like the truck is starving for power. and there is NO pickup. it accelerates the same whether you are barely touching the gas or flooring it. If I can't sell for a reasonable amount I am going to keep it, and will probably do a swap even though it is a rebuilt 2.9. I love the truck, but I am used to chevy 350 and better. I need it to run not walk.

Sounds like the converter is stopped up. That, or the fuel filter is clogged beyond belief. Start with the filter, it is easier to fix. It is located below the driver's seat underneath the vehicle. There is a small plate that protects it inside the frame rail. If it is the converter, just toss that thing and have it dueled out. My '90 model gets 18-22 interstate, depending upon if I have it in overdrive or not. It has a free flowing intake kit and the timing is set to 12 degrees advance static. Good luck.
