Went this morning to look at the $400 Bronco2 I'll be getting soon. Turns out it's an 85 instead of an 84. It's not perfect but that's OK for what I want. Runs great but has trans problems. I'm assuming it's a C5 due to the "OD" position on the selector. It has a manual transfer case and hubs. Bottom of truck looks good, not hammered from hard offroading. Dash has one crack but who cares? Has 15x7 Centerlines with old street tires.
First thing to do once I get it here is to fix the transmission, check everything else out, throw on some good road/trail tires and drive it.
I'll have pics ASAP.

If your rig has (OD) it will have an A4LD. Not much you can do with it except replace it.
Grab the wrenches and dig in.

Tell me they're not difficult to come by. Or are there other options?

Oh A4LD trans are plentiful. Try and get a 92~94 Explorer Trans. Bolts right up.
The A4LD can be made to be decent transmissions but it is costly. I see a lot of people opting for the C4/C5.
A4LD is notorious for having problems with the front seal due to a machining problem in the front of the trans. It can be fixed but it involves machining and there are only am couple of shops left that will do it correctly with the bell housing.
A lot of A4LD trans have problems with sticking valve bodies. Another famous A4LD problem is the servo rings wear out. Oh then there are the forward clutch and planetary gears and drums and all the stuff inside.
There is a lot of info on the trans but you will find most people bad mouth it. I will admit in it's' stock form it is not a very strong trans. Now that said they can be built pretty damn strong with the right parts and a lot of money!!

Tek knows what he's talking about, I'd swap it.
