Help fix my gas guage

My gas guage and temperature guage went out about the same time. The gas guage would stay on E. Every now and then, the guage would move to half and then drop back down to E after a while. I was thinking it was the sending unit but dont want to spend $60.00 if the guage itself is bad(since the temp and gas went out around the same time). Any tips on checking the guage itself?

The metering float sprung a leak and took on fuel which causes it to sink to the bottom of the fuel tank. Ford sells the new float u need.
