can anyone help me?

Post by greengoblin »

ive got an 86' bronco 2 that i recently did a 5 speed swap (mr51 mazda). everything went as planned and i had been driving it for a few months with no problems, lately the starter has been grinding and making a lot of noise and now the bendex spring isnt reaching the flywheel and i cant get the truck to start at all, ive replaced the starter numerous times and have had all of them bench tested and they all seem to engage and disengage fine. i took a peak in the inspection hole in the tranny and the starter isnt fully engaging into the flywheel. so do i have the wrong tranny??? or am i missing something???

If you have any shims or washers on your starter I would suggest removing them. This might help getting your starter closer to your flywheel. Another thing you might try is to use the starter that was with that tranny originaly.

buckin is 100% right, starters are not universal even if they are for the same engine. you have to get the starter that went with the transmission and also the block plate. the block plate sets the depth and closeness to the flywheel. check the ring gear on the flywheel, the teeth are probably all rounded. if they are you need a new flywheel aslo.
