89 BII A4LD tranny issues

Post by Scott »

Have a 89 BII w/A4LD transmission. When I select OD on the gear selector the truck will not move but when R D 1 2 are selected it runs and shifts fine. Im not sure if I need a rebuild or if its something I could handle in my driveway. I did a filter and fluid change and I noticed two electric solenoids on the valve body they look fine but wondered if they might have something to do with the OD troubles. And if the solenoids can be bench tested. Thanks for the help.

O.K. here is what you do Whisper( remove the tranny set it in a field and put about 10lbs of C4 in it and back up and push the button and whatch the fireworks) now that i have offered you no help with that comment here is something to keep in mind the a4ld is a piece of junk everyone has problems with theres mine just last week started pissing fluid all over my exhaust If you are gonna rebuild one go get one out of a 4.0 explorer and rebuild that one it is still not the best tranny in the world but it is better than the 2.9 model. also when you get it rebuilt make sure you put a monster trans cooler on it that is the biggest problem these trannys have is overheating. As far as your problem goes sounds like the overdrive servo/solenoid is bad same that is wrong with the one sitting in my back yard. I am sure someone else will chime in shortly maybe has a better idea
