Roof "Creaking" Fix?

Post by CraigK »

My '87 B2 interior roof "creaks", especially above the driver seat and with the window down, and much worse when it gets colder (now). It seems to be related to the foam lining rubbing slightly against the metal of the cab. Drives me nuts. Also, the surface cloth lining the cab roof has deteriorated and is falling off.

Does anyone else have these problems? Has anyone removed and replaced the interior roof lining of their B2? How? With what? How has it worked?

I cannot find pre-cut B2 roof replacement pieces anywhere, so I was thinking of tearing out the existing cloth and foam liner, and replacing it with some sort of tan colored carpeting. Perhaps using silicone to attach it to the metal of the cab roof. Thoughts? Ideas?

Thanks.

I had already looked at LMC and JCW, and neither seems to have anything. But from the link you provided I went to the WLS Headliners site, and from their installation section was able to get a good idea of what's under the fabric and how it works. Thanks. Very helpful. (I thought the headliner foam was glued to the metal of the cab roof, but apparently not, as it can be removed in one piece.)

What I may do is remove the foam headliner board, glue a layer of short strand carpet to it using the adhesive recommended on the WLS site (I think using carpet may add some sound proofing/deadening to the cab over a stock cloth material), and then actually use silicone to "glue" the headboard liner back in place to prevent future "creaking".

I did my headliner a few weeks ago, got some heavy felt from the fabric store, and some contact type uphlostery spray glue from the auto parts store. All the interior panels have to come out, it makes it easier to get the liner in and out that way. Be sure to scrape all the remaining stuff off the backing of the headliner..i used a scrub brush. Follow the directions on the can of glue, do about a foot at a time when gluing the new material on. Mine looks good as new.
