My wifes 1984 Bronco II has a tired stock Motor 2.8 V6 with an auto trans, she just mentoned dropping a different motor in it, "I" was thinking, since we dont need to have emissions anymore on it that dropping a different motor like a 4cyl or something smaller in it like maybe a Tempo engine or Pinto.
What motor would be a drop in, bolt on fit so i can price out a replacement.
I dont want the current pile of crap 2.8 ever again so if its impossible to find something that will bolt up with minimal wiring the truck will be sold.
I had the mechanic neighbor look at it and he said the valve seals were worn.
but i just hate the 2.8 and want different engine altogether.

some options
First off, the 2.8l had more problems then you could shake a stick at.... but don't fret.....
Here are some options. The 2.9l found in late 89 or 90 (which is what I currently have), this motor was a much better one than the 2.8l. This one would be easiest but some others are the 2.3l found in Ranger, which later became 2.5l around 95 I believe. And the 4.0l in Explorer or Ranger. The 2.3l in a tempo wont really work, transverse mounted engine. But the 4 banger found in Ranger is good as well as 2.9l and 4.0l. All will fit being in a (same frame) Ranger, just not sure on 2.3l with the tranny.
Hope this helps a bit.... don't sell that B2 !

Ford. For Now, Forever!
Best bang for the buck is a 4.0 swap. You'll need to get a complete wiring harness for this since your truck does not have a 'puter. It still would be the best swap. Second best would be a carbureted v8, if you have really deep pockets for fuel.

if you do the 4.0 swap you wont believe the difference in the truck, you will like driving it again, and you say the 2.8 is tired well its a 90 hp stock motor, it really wasnt big enough for the truck when it was built, and the 2.9 is figured about 140 hp ..... the 4.0 they say is around 220 hp, and does a wonderfull job in the bronco II..... but any of the three will bolt to the transmission, but yes the 4.0 is the best motor for the money... but it will require more wiring than the others but if you go to a 2.9 or 4.0 then keep in mind they are fuel injected motors, and currently my 4.0 is getting about 19 mpg... all around driving and my 2.9 that was stock in mine was only getting 18 mpg on highway miles.

My brother terry gave me a ranger he's had sitting next to his house for awhile.
all i need to do to it is change the flex line on the front drivers side caliper and drive it.
The bronco will be parked a long time until i can source a nice 2.9 or 4 banger ranger motor for it I guess.
