strange no start problem

Post by Rockcrawler »

I had the stranges thing happen to me i pulled my truck over to change the engion temp gage and i went to start and i hear the solenoid click but nothing so i jumped the solenoid and get nothing but its getting power to the starter so hell i figured the starter was out. I bought a new starter and put it in and it does the same thing. So now i guess i sezed my motor. So i a socket on it and it turns just fine. Then i go and hit the key again and it starts up just fine!! So i figured the flywheel teeth must have just lined up just right to stop the starter in its tracks before it could even start to spin. Anyone ever had this happen before?

Was this on your 5.0L?

Sounds pretty odd. I'd make sure you have a good ground to your engine.

I have had it happen before with an old starter. They will get gummed up with oil and dirt and won't recoil back properly. I would presume that that shouldn't happen with a new starter though. Did you here the starter pop back to home after you turned the engine?

well the thing is that the new starter did the exact same thing the old one did! It wasnt till i turned the motor over by hand.

IMO it sounds like an electrical issue, either ground, power to the solenoid or the power to the starter itself. I had a problem years ago and everything showed 12V but the starter would not get enough current to turn the motor over, I found that trouble shooting with a set of jumper cables :redneck:

Years ago I had a Chevy Nova where the teeth on the timing chain were 1/2 gone; are the teeth on the flywheel OK?
