1989 5.0L engine or 1973 5.0L engine

Post by bartmantom »

well I just got myself into a bit of a pickle, I origanally purchased a 1973 302 with 84000 origanal miles to put into my B2, and now I just got a 1989 302 paid $100, bought it for the complete serpintene belt setup, well as it sits it's a complete motor, injectors, wiring harness, upper air intake, everything. I was looking a bit closer at it and it has a tag on it from a local machine shop, called them up and they told me the engine was rebuilt 9 months ago. so my predicament is now do I go with injected motor or go with the carbed motor. I know the Carbed one would be easier but the injected one would be nice

the 89 302 was pulled out of a full size Bronco, the guy pulled it to put one of those 4 cylinder Cummins turbo deisels. said the motor ran strong just wanted to go with the deisel. (ofcourse that's if you believe him, I do)

I know if I go with the injected one I would still need to find a computer, and figure out the wiring

Or should I just go with the Carbed one and put a Holly projection setup on it at a later date??

Or is there something else about the 89 302 that I don't know that would cause problems?

What do you guys think. go with the 1989 injected 302 or the 1973 carbed 302?? any advise would be appreciated.

I'd go with fuel injection and lower miles.
What did the motor come out of?
The injection wiring isnt all that bad, you got the wiring harness, now you need a computer. If you have any problems find you a wiring print either offline or in a manual from the auto parts store.

you could just keep the low milage motor and the carb and intake off the other, then sell what is left of the older motor. personaly I like carbs but EFI is nice too. duraspark is way easy to wire...
71 Bronco - twin sticked, full width, 2" lift, wristed arm, lots of rust...

What is your truck going to be used for? If its going to be an off-roading machine you better go with injection so you can run anywhere. But if it is just a street thing than you should be fine with the carb. And for the CPU and wiring harness I would go back to the bronco guy and take it off of him because he wont be able to use it on that cummins anyway.

Check out fordfuelinjection.com for info on interchang of computers.
Ranger 5.o, needing another project like Rosie O'Donnell needs another M&M.
