4 liter swap with problems
I took a motor and tranny out of a 91 explorer and put it in my 85 B2 but I kept the stock t-case from the B2. And now I have two major problems. First of all my front driveshaft is now too short by about 2 inches and the shifter for the tranny is too far forward in the shifter hole meaning I have to cut my floor. Has anyone else had these problems. Can they be fixed?
The Trans will be an M5OD if it's a standard. The hole in the floor plate will have to be cut and relocated. Same for the t-cse shifter if it is a manual.
The metal floor plate from the explorer won't work either so there is no easy way around it but to cut.
I welded the section closed on mine that was not needed.
I made a cardboard template for mine first so that I can change teh cut lines around, so that the shifters had free movement.

The T-case he is using is a 1350 and the front outputs are different. If you want one to bolt on you'll have to find a driveshaft from a 88 or 89, that has the Mitz FM146 trans.

The 1350 uses a slipyoke for a front output. The 1354 from the explorer would be a fixed yoke. There are some 1350's with a fixed yoke but they are normally found in the STX highriders.84_4x4 wrote:

The stock explorer shaft has a slip spline between the joints. It's also a double cardian on the t-case end.
He could use the 1354 from the sploder but his front shaft will still be too short. as the D35 pig is about 1.5" longer than a D28 pig.
There is also a 3" difference between the M5OD and the TK5 (Or FM145) that was originally in the 85 he has.
So without swapping more he is kinda SOL. He can either get the shaft lengthened to work or find one that is longer.
The shaft I have is from an 89 Bronco II that was a FM146 (same length as M5OD and A4LD) with the D28 front axle.
I can get a measurement for you. I bet the shaft you have is about 3" short right?

You have a 4.0L with M5OD and a 1350 transfer case.
D28 front axle and a 7.5 rear.
The shafts you would be looking for are off of a Bronco II with an FM146/A4LD and 1350. Engine really doesn't have much to do with it.
Now the shafts your looking for are the long front shaft for between a 1350 and D28?
The rear one your looking for is the CV style? From athe 1350 Flange to the 7.5 flange. This would be the short one. I know I have the long one, I may have the short one one of those also.
Let me check my parts truck and I'll let you know.

the measurement I got for the front was from the yolk to the end of the coupler on the t-case which is about 2-3'' longer than the shaft I have. The rear measurement was from flange to flange. I dont have the right driveshaft for that either. I'm not sure how long the front shaft is I just know it has to be more than 30.5''. And I know the rear has to be close to 31 5/16''.
