Newbie Checking In and a Question

Post by oldred »

Hi, I'm new to the forum.
I have a 1989 XLT 4X4 with the 2.9L in it, 5 spd manual and 98,733 original miles. I'm only the third owner (bought a year ago) and about 3 months ago started making some noise. What can I do to increase the oil pressure to hold down the top end noise? When it starts up the oil pressure is mid range and everything sounds fine. After it warms up the oil pressure drops down to the letter N on NORMAL and sometimes dips a little lower, and I get the sound of popcorn cooking from around the heads when I back off the accelerator. If i get above 2300 rpm it starts to make lots of noise. I don't believe the valves have ever had the lash adjusted. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Replace the Cam bearings and Camshaft and Oil pump would be a good start.

You would be money ahead to just completely rebuild your motor completely.
