9" gear setup?

Post by DBrown »

anyone here ever set up a 9"?

I have a question.....ok maybe two :finger:

first question: there are no carrier shims in my kit and it looks like the way it goes together is by screwing in two large retainers to set the preload and moves the carrier side to side to set backlash. any one ever see this? if this is right how do I find preload? special tool also required?

next question: there are shims that go between the pinion support and the 3rd housing.......I am guessing that this is the way to set pinion depth?

I think the assembly looks pretty easy but I just wanted to clearify this.

Yep, you got it. 9's are probably the easiest to set up. You don't have to press your bearings on and off a dozen times. You'll need a spanner wrench to set the carrier preload. I'm not sure on the torque specs.

If I remember right, the spanner socket for your front hubs fits. I may be wrong on the socket though, Iv done several 9" setups, and we have several hub tools, but Im 99% sure the one you have (or should) will work. As far as preload on the carrier bearings, its kinda a feel thing, but the torque you can get with a 1/2 ratchet, is about right. You dont have to kill yourself with them, just a good hard snug. If you have a large bench vise, grap the housing in the vise on the flange that bolts it to the housing, and life is good. One more thing, if you try to hard to seat the pinion bearing (the little one) you can easly waste a carrier housing....tap, tap, tap!

thanks for the help I am almost ready to get out the marking compound!
I got to get some lock tight for the ring bolt threads. pinion is together except for the final torque of the pinion nut.....those races did not want to come out. I got some carnage pics of the outer pinion bearing that came out of this thing....its ugly. I probably need to just scrap the 3.50's I pulled out of it. pic's will come soon!

Do you have a in-lbs torque wrench to check the pinion bearing preload? You don't want to just ram it down tight.

I can't see the drive side very well. The coast side looks like the pinion is a too close.

What is your Backlash set at?

Add .006 to the pinion, set BL and see what it looks like.

Are you putting resistance on the ring gear and turning the pinion?

I just noticed the hardwood floor! Are you trying to get yourself killed!

sorry it took so long to get back I was playing with the setup paint looking at how the pattern reacted to what I did. I think I got it better but the drive side is a little close to the center of the teeth the coast side looks like it is centered better though. let me know what you think.

this is what I have now:

my book says that is aacceptable......but I would still like some input. oh, and the back lash is 15 it is at the top of the tolerance but I heard it is better to have it on the loose end for offroad.

the wife is out of town so she has no idea

Tighten that Backlash up to the low end of the spec. Especially with new gears and bearings. I think that's part of the problem. I can't think of any reason to run at the top end of the spec. Personally I would want as little slop as possible.

I don't like how the coast side is down at the toe of the tooth. Tighten that backlash up and then lets have a look. I think the pinion is still too deep.

The drive side has some hard lines at the top and bottom. Don't like that either.

Try and get that coast side off the edge of the tooth.

here is what I got now, I see what you mean about the crisp lines.
do you think it might have something to do with the fact they are so low(5.13's)? or should they set up nice and pretty like any other?

I read the paper wrong it needs to be 7-10 so I am at 9

Looking much better!

You could probably run that, but I'd tight that backlash up a little more. Those pictures aren't very good either!

edit:
Have you added any shims?Did you add the initial .006" I suggested? If so, you might add another .003"

accually added some and it got worse so I took some out just messing around and thats what I got, I have .021 in there now I had around .029 in there before. I didn't really like that the one side was at the center either but it looks like it is coming back to the center. I will try to tweak it some more......thanks for all the help so far
