Driveline Swap

Post by Keith »

I have an 87 2wd and an 88 4wd both automatics W/2.9L. Are the drivetrains compatible for moving the 88 drivetrain to the 87? The 2wd transmission is out on the 87 so the tranmission would need to be moved as well as the transfer case and axle. The 87 engine is fresh so I would like to marry the 87 engine and chassis to the 88 drive train. Any major bracketry or electrical issues?

Thanks for any help..

As far as I know, it' should all be pretty interchangable. I believe your 2wd comes with a "dummy" transfer case. So you may be able to keep the existing transmission, and just swap t-cases. Probably wouldn't be any easier though. Assuming same transmission in both, the driveline length should be good.
