Finally got around to draining and refilling axle oils on my BII....rear was dark and sludgy while the front was nice and golden still.
Haven't driven it a ton yet but I have yet to hear the popping noise so I'm thinking the fluid swap did the trick....

If your oil was all sludgy.i would change it again and replace the wheel seals and probably the pinion seal.
