wierd sounds

Ok truck runs good transmission slips a little when changing gears, but my problem is when I reverse i get a noise that sounds like a rollercoaster going up to the top. Im almost positive its the

front axles but do i have anything to worry about? its a 90 model 2.9 with automatic 281,345 miles.

but why would it be the axles if there is no force being put on them, it makes the noise in 2 wheel drive. Could it be the transfercase?

my bet goes to the lock outs...are they factory lockout hubs?
71 Bronco - twin sticked, full width, 2" lift, wristed arm, lots of rust...

The factory hubs have problem disengaging at times. I assume you have the pushbutton type? If so, thats it. There was even a recall on them back in '90.

So hopefully it's just the hubs and not the axles themselves? Why does it only make the noise in reverse, and is it something i can ignore for a little while if I'm not using four wheel drive?

The reason it does it in reverse is the auto hubs are designed to disengage when you put it in reverse and back up. The main thing the auto hubs don't do very good is disengage and engage when they get dirty gummy and worn they don't work very smoothly and the sound you hear is one or both hubs hanging in reverse.

Well if its slipping it may be the sun bell gear? if the above stated dose not fix it u may check into that
